Shingle vs. Metal Roofing: Which Is Best for Louisiana Weather?

Shingle or metal? It's one of the first questions homeowners ask when replacing a roof. Here's an honest comparison for our climate.

Asphalt shingles: the popular standard

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing choice for good reasons: they're affordable, they look great, they come in many colors, and quality architectural shingles hold up well against Gulf South weather. Modern impact-rated shingles are also far more hail-resistant than the old 3-tab style.

Best for: most homeowners who want a proven, cost-effective roof that looks classic and performs well.

Metal roofing: the long-haul investment

Metal roofs cost more up front but last significantly longer — often 40 to 70 years. They shed water and resist wind extremely well, reflect heat (which can lower cooling bills in our brutal summers), and stand up to storms. The tradeoff is the higher initial cost and a different look that not everyone prefers.

Best for: homeowners planning to stay long-term who want maximum durability and energy efficiency.

How to decide

The truth is, the installer matters more than the material. A quality roof installed by a careful local crew will outperform a premium material installed poorly.
