Choosing the wrong roofer can cost you thousands and leave you with a leaky roof and no recourse. Here's how to choose well.
Green flags: what a good contractor has
- A local, physical presence — they're part of your community and will be here next year.
- Proper licensing and insurance — always ask for both.
- A real track record — reviews, references, and an established reputation (like an A+ BBB rating).
- Clear, written estimates — no vague napkin math.
- Honesty about what you need — including telling you when you don't need a full replacement.
Red flags: run the other way
- Door-to-door high pressure right after a storm. "Storm chasers" flood areas after hail, sign as many contracts as possible, and often vanish.
- Asking for large payment up front before any work is done.
- No physical address or local references.
- Pressure to sign immediately — "today only" pricing is a manipulation tactic.
- Offers to "waive your deductible." This is illegal in Louisiana and is a sign of a dishonest operator.
That last one matters: any contractor offering to absorb or waive your insurance deductible is asking you to participate in insurance fraud. A legitimate contractor won't do it.
